Brassica Brunch Review

Birthday weekend part 2! Yeet.

So actually, I spent my second birthday weekend doing army things and spending the night at my mother’s house.  Since she’s the greatest human on the planet, my mom made me miyeok guk (미역국), which is a seaweed soup that Koreans eat on their birthdays because a long time ago, Korean mothers would eat miyeok guk after giving birth because seaweed has a lot of iron in it.  She also made me bossam (보쌈) which is boiled pork belly because pork belly is another one of my favorite things.  One day, I’ll write about these things, but today is not that day.

Today, I review Brassica! I went there last week with Whitney for birthday brunch. It’s literally the most hipster restaurant in my area and they were playing trap music on a Sunday morning which I particularly enjoyed.

This place was bumping when we got there! Whitney and I had planned our walk so that we would arrive right at ten when the restaurant opened and it was already full of people.  I really liked that the kitchen was right at the bar and you could see all the different things people had ordered while standing in line.  AND THE BAKED GOODS. They were just there, tempting you while you stood in line and waited to order.  They bake all of their own breads, bagels, and pastries and they all looked AMAZING.

I ordered the Chicken and Waffles, and Whitney ordered The Tower Street on brioche (a breakfast sandwich).  Overall, the meals were pretty good! Whitney’s biggest complaint was that the sandwich didn’t come with hash browns since the sandwich on its own wasn’t very filling.  Despite the egg being well done (We share a preference for runny yolks), the yolk was distributed well throughout the sandwich and went well with the green tomato, aioli, and veggie sausage patty.

I really enjoyed my chicken and waffles too! The waffles were delicious and tasted like brioche with a nice, lightly sweet maple syrup that went well with the crispy fried chicken (that still managed to be moist as hell).  I think they must have put some ginger in the batter because there was definitely a little bit of a gingery spice.  It was so good!  My only complaint was the hot sauce…It was a garlic-chili sauce (think like chunky sriracha) that was tasty on it’s own, but I felt that the garlic was really strong and didn’t really play well with the sweetness of the waffles.

Chicken and Waffles!

What I’m really excited to tell you all about are the baked goods though! I’m literally drooling just think about them.  We got a duck donut that was covered with a cherry glaze and crisped duck on top and a orange flower water poppyseed muffin to share.

Dat cross-section doe.

YO.  I was in heaven eating these.  The donut was to die for.  The first bite really surprised me because it tasted like straight-up duck, like they took duck fat and incorporated it into the donut.  Every bite after that, the cherry glaze really came through and worked well with the donut and the crisped duck.  The donut was also nice and dense but still had a bunch of nice little airy pockets in it.

The muffin was freaking wonderful too.  It was sweet, but not in an overwhelming way and the orange flavor was subtle but definitely present. There was also a really light floral taste from the orange flower water glaze that was drizzled on top.  The muffin was super dense (even more dense than the donut) and I’m so glad we decided to share it because I don’t think I would have been able to finish it on my own.

So there you have it! Brassica Brunch review in the books.  I’ll probably talk about the disaster of trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner with my mother for the first time next week, so look forward to that!

Yas Queen!! It was so yummy!! I’m drooling just thinking about that donut and muffin. Only mild complaint was the portion. When I decide to go out for brunch, I’d like to leave with at least a full belly. Next time I’ll remember to order hash browns on the side!
